On the morning of the Primary Election, May 7, 2024, it was discovered the key fob used to enter the polling location would not open the building at 5am. The Inspector, Dylan Phillips, called our Election Day Hotline after being unable to contact the emergency contacts. We sent out an Election Board member to assist with the situation. Before the polls opened at 6am, the poll workers set up the emergency polling location using the trunks of a truck and SUV. They powered up the Poll Pads, plugged in the printers inside the 2 vehicles and had emergency ballots ready for voters. Since it was dark and rainy, workers also used car headlights to light up the parking lot and held umbrellas to keep voters dry while they checked in and voted. At 6:30am, the Inspector was finally able to get into the building, and with the help of our mechanic, our workers swiftly got the voting machines ready for the rest of the day. Due to the quick thinking of the entire team and the assistance of our Election board member, we are proud to award the Jeanne Nicolet Delivering Democracy Award to the poll workers of Heartland Community Church.
